National Children’s Choir Concert (Cór na nÓg)
The National Children’s Choir Concert took place recently in the Church of the Assumption, Tullamore on May 9 at 8pm. Every child in 5th and 6th class from our school, as well as children from St Philomenas NS, Durrow NS, Clara Girls NS, Gortnamona NS Ballyboy NS and St Pauls NS Portlaoise performed a wide and varied repertoire together on the evening. A huge amount of preparation had gone into this by all of the pupils with the assistance of Miss Sheeran, Miss Davis and Miss Corcoran. It was a great night and the pupils gave a superb performance that everyone was exetremely proud of. Well done all!!
Best of luck to the pupils selected to represent the school at the national concert on the 28th of May in the National Concert Hall.
The following is a pupils account of her Cór na nÓg experience
Cór na nÓg. 12/5/11
Cór na nÓg was held on the 9 of May 2011 in the Church of the Assumption, Tullamore.
Cór na nÓg means ‘The Young Concert’. As part of our preparation for the concert we were given some songs to learn. We had from September until May to learn them. There was seven schools altogether singing in the concert including:
There are music teachers in each school and they teach us the songs. We sang opera, Irish and Latin songs including, We Sail the Ocean Blue, Mo Ghile Mear, O-Zone, Earthsong, Funiculi Funicula, Over the Rainbow, Toreador song, Beidh Aonach Amárach, A Clare Benediction, Ag Críost an Síol, Do bhiosa la bPortlairge, Down to the river to pray, Ave verum, songs of Ireland, Adiemus and Speed your Journey.
Our music teacher in Killeigh NS is Miss Sheerran. She is an amazing teacher. She has taught us so much about singing in a choir e.g. Harmonys, signs of music, and the words of songs. We had 3 practice sessions altogether with all the other schools in the Laois and Offaly region.
Our concert was then held on the 9 of May in the church of the Assumption, Tullamore. About 300 pupils were singing on the night. The concert started at 8:00 and went on for an hour and a ½. My granny and mammy went to the concert. My mammy said “the concert was truly brilliant”, she also said “that we sounded lovely. My granny said ”It was the best concert she had ever been to.“ I really enjoyed myself and thought that the conductors and the orchestra were really nice, and everyone put in a huge effort. I would like to thank all of the people that helped organize this wonderful event including our teachers Miss Sheeran, Miss Davis and Miss Corcoran.
