Improving Literacy
A number of initiatives are currently underway to improve literacy throughout the school and to encourage a love of reading for information and for pleasure.

1) Reading Buddies
All classes are participating once again in the 'Reading Buddies' initiative. Each Wednesday for half hour period, children from junior classes join their partner from senior classes where they read for each other. It has proven successful in previous years and as well as improving children's reading, they have made new friends.

2. Paired Reading
Third and fifth class are participating in the Paired Reading scheme which involves children working in pairs, reading aloud for each other and finding the meaning of new words together. Each pair then shares the meaning of the new words they have met. This programme is running for a 6 week programme.

3. School Book Fair
Thank you very much to all parents who have so generously supported our book fair. A phenomenal total of €2987 worth of books was purchased. The school in turn gets 60% of total sales worth in books, in other words, each class will receive over €200 worth of new books for their class library. Well done to Ms Kelly, Ms Dollard and the children who ran the fair so successfully.

4.Books Wanted
If anyone has a supply of children’s book which they no longer require, or which their children have read and are finished with, we would gladly accept them for our library which we are establishing in the schools computer room. Barry Dolan has done a beautiful job installing shelves which we now hope to fill with good quality second hand books. If you know of any friends no longer connected with the school who have a stock of children’s books or novels they no longer require, please send them on to us.
