Our School Buddy Walk

posted Jun 18, 2021, 5:40 AM by Jakki Moriarty   [ updated Jun 18, 2021, 6:07 AM ]

As part of our flag we created a walkway around the school. The idea of this is to get and keep the children active. It is a walkway chosen by the committee which takes you around the school grounds. It is secure and behind gates. It incorporates the school garden into it. The children helped us put up the signs which are used to mark it along the way. The idea is that kids can talk while they walk. It has been very inclusive for children who don't necessarily enjoy ball games but like to move and be active while they chat.

Skipping Challenge

posted Jun 18, 2021, 5:18 AM by Jakki Moriarty

Our Active Committee suggested we get the children skipping. Some of the children found it difficult but were determined to tryy and succeed. Our school purchased 35 skipping ropes and the children got skipping. They had access to the ropes at break times on yard ans skipped to their hearts content.

Daily Mile Initiative

As part of our Active Flag we embarked upon the Daily Mile Initiative. This is where children are encouraged to run a mile a day. Many children would not have been able to run and so began walking and over time built up their fitness. The children walked. jogged or ran a mile a day. It was very quickly incorporated into our daily routine in the classroom. It helped wake the children up first thing. Teachers commented how the children felt energised after it and ready for the next task in class. It served as a great movement break. Teachers were able to remind the children about their fundamental movement skills and the teaching points for walking and running. We marked out a pathway around the school and the children ran 5-6 laps including a cool down.

Playground Leaders

This has been one of the most successful ideas introduced to our school via the School Active Flag. It was a wonderful initiative and one that we will continue with forever more. The older children love playing simple playground games with the younger classes. It helped the younger classes settle into life in the playground, helped with establishing friendships and learning games. It has been great for establishing relationships between the older classes and younger and is very inclusive. The Playground Leaders drew up a timetable, were very careful in planning games, organising equipment and taking care of it. We had to temporarily stop this due to Covid but it will certainly be back up and running in the next school year.

Tractor Run

A very successful day out was organised in conjunction with our Tractor Run Fundraiser. The main event was held at the weekend but the children dressed up in suitable attire for the occasion and we had a mini tractor run here at the school. The children drove their vehicles, all shapes and sizes around the school grounds and through Millbrook. We had fun and games. A great event that brought the school together.

Run Around Ireland Challenge

posted Jun 18, 2021, 3:04 AM by Jakki Moriarty   [ updated Jun 18, 2021, 3:07 AM ]

We are delighted to announce that our school will be taking part in the Active Schools Run Around Ireland challenge. This 4-week challenge encourages schools to build a running break into every day. It’s an excellent way for children to learn about some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks and ideal for bringing learning outdoors.
Each class will run laps of either our school grounds or across the road in Killeigh walking track. The total laps completed by each pupil are added together to give a total for each class. For our younger classes 1 lap = 1 km. Our senior classes are trying to run 1km = 1km. After calculating our total distance we see how far we got to in Ireland.

Finally, we wish to thank the committee of the walking track for kindly letting us use the walking track. This is another incredible facility in our locality and we congratulate the committee on their hard work making this wonderful facility available for the people of Killeigh.

This is the results of week 1 for each class. Well done boys and girls.

ZUMBA DANCE 😊

When the school decided to apply for the Schools Active Flag the children, staff and committee members thought it would be a lovely idea to incorporate more of what we do in PE into our school and develop it further. Gymnastics and Dance were the two that were decided on. We decided to go with the Dance first off and may look at Gymnastics down the road. We found the most amazing and highly energetic teacher, Dorinda Cuskelly. Her energy and enthusiasm is infectious and the children love it; Zumba. Yes we love Zumba. The children have learned lovely simple dance routines to songs that are current and that they love. More importantly they have gained confidence and had fun and best of all they are active. Zumba has given children the opportunity to try dance. Some children have gone on to join after school clubs that offer dance. Dance is very trendy at the moment what with Tik Tok. Even the boys loved it!
The children learned dance routines at Halloween which they showcased to the school and the 6th class children got to do something as a finish up/ end of school event. We are delighted to have embraced Zumba and thanks to the children for thinking active and coming up with the idea.

Halloween Time!!!

posted Jun 15, 2021, 4:51 AM by Jakki Moriarty   [ updated Jun 18, 2021, 2:47 AM ]

There is a longstanding tradition in our school of dressing up at Halloween. Children start making costumes from October 1st. What I found honest and endearing when I first came to the school was the interest and effort the children put in, and the Dads!!!!!! There was every size make and character of costume. The children would gather, recycle and upcycle to produce fabulous one off costumes. The children love to see what the staff come to school dressed as. There was a tradition of 'a catwalk' in the school hall where everyone got to showcase their outfit. However since deciding that we would apply for our Active School Flag we needed to take things one step further. The children were encouraged to THINK ACTIVE and so they decided to bring two elements into Halloween - Dance and Walking. Our 6th class worked with our Zumba teacher and class teachers to learn the routine to a song fitting for Halloween. The children performed it on the day of the Halloween break when everyone was in costume. It was fabulous. They children were working on strands such as Performing from their Music Curriculum while having lots of fun too. The younger children loved watching and were in awe of the older ones performing.
The children also decided to take the event outdoors so they could make it more active. They planned a route from the school and in around Millbrook. Here they paraded around the green and back to the school. It gave all the classes the opportunity to showcase themselves and see each other. The residents got a birds eye view also.

Zumba

One of the most popular a activities in school every year is Zumba. We are delighted that Dorinda Cuskelly has joined us once again to lead us and show us the moves. The kids really enjoyed the first session this week. This year due to Covid restrictions we are unable to hold it indoors. We are incredibly grateful to Clodiagh Gaels who have very generously allowed us to use their facilities for Zumba. Without this we may not have been in a position to have Zumba. We thank Clodiagh Gaels and of course Dorinda whose energy is infectious.
