Fyffes Fit Squad

posted Jun 18, 2021, 4:26 AM by Jakki Moriarty   [ updated Jun 18, 2021, 4:36 AM ]

Fyffes want to provide children of all ages with the chance to increase their physical activity in a fun and easy way. They have two fit squad coaches Kellie and David who through their virtual hub get the children active every Tuesday and Thursday. They have great energy and enthusiasm and encourage everybody to join in. We support Fyffes and commend them on the great work they do. Fyffes have visited our school and will be calling to see us in September where they will put the children through their paces with fun exercises for all.

Athletics - Tullamore Harriers & Offaly Athletics

Tullamore Harriers Athletic Club

The Tullamore Harriers Club was established in 1953 and holds many national competitions. The facilities there are up there with the best in the country and we are privileged that some of our children get to run and partake in events there.  We are regular visitors to The Harriers and liaise with them for annual events such as cross country events and memorial events. Our older classes get quite competitive about gaining entry to the events they hold.

The Colin Dunne Memorial is an annual one for us. The boys and girls really enjoy the day out and love to bring home a few medals too. They get to meet up with other schools and a get the chance to race and perform track and field events which they may not otherwise have access to. Not every child enjoys ball games and this affords children the opportunity to explore other activities /interests which is healthy for body and mind.

The Athletics strand for senior pupils is taught around the time of the Colin Dunne Memorial Athletics competition. In addition to the fundamental movement skills, every child learns a range of athletics disciplines. From these lessons a team is chosen to enter the competition in the Harriers.

Another very popular event every year is the Offaly Athletics Schools Cross Country competition. This is held in the Harriers every year.

Gaelic Athletic Association
As GAA is the stronghold of our community, in school and outside, the children get very excited about having GAA coaches come to our school. These coaches offer skills, knowledge and expertise to the children and staff.

The GAA share our schools view of the importance of Fundamental Movement Skills for children. Offaly Coaching and Games have worked with coaches such as Paudie Butler to design programs that incorporates a large number of fundamental movement skills and strands of the PE curriculum. At the start of the school year, coaches sit down with representatives from our staff to work out a plan of which  fundamental movement skills and PE strands will be covered.

We wish to thank our partners Na Fianna Minor Hurling club, Offaly Coaching and Games and Leinster GAA for their support in this initiative.

We also have regular communication with our partners through designated club contacts. Any club achievements are celebrated in our school.

We also acknowledge the incredible support of Clodiagh Gaels GAA club who allow our school the use of their grounds. This includes walking track, playing field and astro pitch. Their generosity is greatly appreciated.

Offaly Sports Partnership
We are very lucky to be able to liaise with and have strong ties with Offaly Sports Partnership. Their aim is to increase participation in sport and physical activity throughout Offaly. As we are applying for our Active School Flag this is of huge benefit to us. The staff and children learn a lot and benefit hugely from partnerships like this.

Jean Brady is the Offaly Sports Partnership Inclusion Officer and a regular to our school. We benefit from initiatives the partnership operate;  such as Fitness Assessments and Activity Programmes like Class Fit. These were put on hold due to Covid but will be back in action and returning with a new programme in September 2021 all going well.

Tullamore Rugby/ Leinster Rugby.
Our school works in partnership with Tullamore Rugby Club. We are lucky to have coach  John Burns come to our school and share and pass to us his rugby experience and knowledge of the game. Rugby skils are taught using Tag Rugby. The children love it and it is one of the most popular activities for senior classes.. They are learning about rugby, how to handle pass and play as well as language associated with the game.  The children also focus on the Fundamental Movement Skills of dodging and side stepping during these sessions. It's all about giving them a taste or flavour of a well loved sport in our country.

We really appreciate the support of Tullamore RFC and Leinster Rugby for providing these coaching sessions. We have also been honoured to welcome some of the top rugby trophies in the world. Leinster and Ireland have enjoyed considerable success in the past and they have kindly given schools the opportunity to share in this success.

Visit of U13 cup

posted Oct 23, 2020, 7:57 AM by Owen Breslin

It was our great pleasure to welcome the captains of the victorious Na Fianna U17 and U13 hurlers this morning. Sean Rattigan and Jack Fox brought the winners trophys with coach Colm Cassidy. It is always a great achievement to reach a final but to go on and win two finals especially against the backdrop of Covid-19 restrictions is some achievement. Many of our 6th class boys also featured on the U13 team and we congratulate them and their team mates.

Thanks to Colm Cassidy and the two lads for taking the time to visit!
